The Organization

We have been retained byThe American Chemical Society to find a Human Resources professional for the newly created executive level position of Deputy Director for Strategy, Planning and Technology.  The American Chemical Society, headquartered in downtown Washington, DC, is a self-governed individual membership organization that has more than 160,000 members at all degree levels and in all fields of chemistry. The organization has approximately 2,000 employees and provides a broad range of opportunities for peer interaction and career development, regardless of professional or scientific interests. The programs and activities conducted by ACS today are the products of a tradition of excellence in meeting member needs that dates from the Society’s founding in 1876.

The Position
This newly created strategic position reports directly to the Human Resources Director who reports to the CEO.  The Deputy Director will be a key member of the senior management team, responsible for all aspects of HR planning and projects, and aligning those with the objectives and business initiatives of the Association. S/He will lead the development of succession planning and comprehensive career development for ACS. The Deputy Director will also develop the technology strategy for HR in coordination with the CIO as well as manage the HRIS.   In addition, this position will assemble, work with and lead teams across the organization and in HR to develop new plans, projects and initiatives that require broad organizational commitment and support while providing clear goals and milestones, completion dates and appropriate follow up mechanisms. The finance and administrative operations of the Department will directly report to this position.  The Deputy Director will have four direct reports. 


Responsibilities

  • Evaluate the present suite of HR projects and initiatives and target those which should move forward.  Set timelines and establish clear metrics to measure progress. Recommend any new project/initiatives which would advance the goals of HR and the ACS.
  • Ensure the successful and timely completion of two major initiatives underway, Performance Management and Succession Planning. Coordinate project management and critical teams across the organization.
  • Develop a long term technology plan for HR which is consistent with the needs of the Department as well as the technology plan developed by the CIO. Implementing a fully functional HRIS is a priority. Evaluate software products for the future.
  • Forecast future HR projects including a regular, in depth review of core competencies of the organization and workforce strength.  This review will be critical to senior ACS leadership to assess recruitment strategies aligned with the new Strategic Plan.  Make recommendations to restructure and align the workforce with core competencies needed to achieve goals and objectives in both the short (one year) medium (2-3 yrs.) and long term (5+ years) timeframes.
  • Assist the HR Director in any planning projects which are assigned to her by the Board or ACS Executive Director.
  • Coordinate projects to establish a master list of projects/initiatives. Determine scheduling, team composition, metrics for success, and appropriate deadlines.  Update and the master list of projects and communicate status of all activities with all HR team members and the HR Director.
  • Manage the Department’s operating budgets and ensure that all accounts are appropriately reconciled and follow establish rules and regulations.
Requirements
  • Bachelors in Human Resources or related discipline, Masters preferred and ten or more years of progressive management experience in human Resources
  • Strong Project Management skills with in depth knowledge of planning and project management within the context of Human Resources.
  • Strong technology background and experience with the application of technology to human resource functions.
  • Creative intelligence. Insight into the future of the Association through organizational initiatives.
  • A preference for working in and the ability to build strong teams.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Ability to follow up on priorities and bring projects to successful completion.
  • Experience with finance and budgeting is desirable.
  • Excellent presentation skills and experience in complex organizations.
