Corcoran Gallery of Art and College of Art and Design Chief Operating Officer The Institution Founded in 1869, the Corcoran Gallery of Art stands as a major center of American and European fine and decorative art, historic and contemporary. Specifically “for the purpose of encouraging American Genius,” the Corcoran’s extensive collection of 18th, 19th, and 20th century American art represents most significant American artists. The Corcoran College of Art and Design was originally founded in 1890 and is the only accredited undergraduate and graduate art school in Washington, DC. It offers a wide range of BFA and MA degrees as well as a full continuing education program. The annual budget is approximately $20 million. Principal sources of revenue include development, tuition and visitor fees.
Located across from the South Lawn of the White House, the Corcoran Gallery of Art was described by Frank Lloyd Wright as the "best - designed building in Washington, DC." The Corcoran's spectacular beaux-arts building is a favorite location for Washington's most important social events. There are a café and a retail shop on the premises.
Position The Corcoran has created a new position, Chief Operating Officer (“COO”). This position along with the Chief Academic Officer (“CAO”), are the two executives reporting to the Director and President of the institution and all will work in partnership with the Board of Trustees to oversee the business and operating affairs of the institution.
Through the various department executives, the COO will lead the principal business and support activities of the institution. The COO will contribute to the development and successful realization of the strategic goals and objectives of the Corcoran, will lead the preparation of the annual business plan and will be responsible, along with CAO, to successfully implement those goals through the execution of that plan. Direct executive reports include Chief Financial Officer, VP Advancement, VP Marketing, Director IT and Director Human Resources and responsible functions include Finance, Legal and Risk Management, Administration, Facilities Management, Retail, Human Resources, Development, Membership, Marketing and Information Technology. The CAO is responsible the academic and artistic output of the overall institution, including the permanent gallery and visiting art collections, degree programs and non credit public education programs.
Detailed responsibilities for this highly visible position include the following:

Contribute to the achievement and development of the strategic goals and help convert those goals into coherent annual operating plans that include detailed financial plans and budgets.

Lead the successful implementation of the plan to ensure that the Corcoran meets its annual operating objectives.

Serve as a principal interface with the report including attendance at all meetings of the Board and related committees

Serve as a principal advisor to the Director and President and other Corcoran executives, focusing on business planning, analysis and operations with both a strategic and tactical focus.

Develop organization operating policies

Provide leadership, mentoring and professional development to the direct report executives. Develop a well conceived succession plan for all key management positions.

Ensure that the mission, values and culture established by the Board and the Director are maintained.

Oversee all risk management and institutional legal issues and be alert to coordinate with the Director of Operations and Security who has overall responsibility for the institutions physical plant and building security.
Requirements This position requires a person with at least 15 years experience in general management, including 5 years in a lead organizational leadership role. While not required, experience with a not for profit college or museum is very desirable.

The breath of experience, perspective and depth to assist the Director in developing the institutional strategic plan.

A good understanding of budgeting, financial reporting, and financial and business analysis.

Experience in development, fund raising or sales.

Exposure to marketing strategy.

Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills.

The ability to attract, hire, develop, motivate and lead executives and staff to insure efficient performance of their duties.

The maturity and confidence to interact with the Board of Trustees, other Corcoran executives, and outside agencies in a professional and productive manner.

A proactive mindset which will be needed to continually seek improvements in the financial and related operations of the institution.
